[The Saturday Special for Feb 1] Sakanaction, Takayuki Manabe + Kousuke Sugimoto, Cibo Matto, & Rip Slyme

This post was originally posted on Reddit here. You cannot embed video there, so this post exists as sort of an alternative. As a reminder, Saturdays are for showcasing three music videos with excellent concepts and a one that's particularly bad. Please note that the videos are better resolution if you open them in a new screen.

Cool Concept #1: Takayuki Manabe + Kousuke Sugimoto - The TV Show

Sugimoto is an independent animator that directed and created this impressively intricate piece of work backed with music created by Takayuki Manabe. "The TV Show" is a meta animation exploring different Japanese television channels identified by different colors and sometimes art styles (if you're colorblind, a lot will be missed). What starts off as a harmless "show" quickly dissolves into a chain reaction of kaleidoscopic chaos. It's racked up over a million videos for good reason - you have to watch it at least three times to catch everything.

Cool Concept #2: Sakanaction - Me ga Aku Aiiro

This subreddit is already a little warmed up to indie-pop band Sakanaction, but have you taken a good strong look at the the promotional video for "Me Ga Aku Aiiro"?. The title loosely translations to "Eye-Opening Indigo Blue". This seven-minute-long video features do-and-undo plot as various real-life objects are manipulated in stop motion. At times, the items on scree directly correlate to the music and its lyrics. It's visually captivating, especially with so many blue objects against a bright white background.

Cool Concept #3: Cibo Matto - Sugar Water

Here's one for you Shibuya-kei fans from 1996. This video was shot in New York City by Academy Award winning French videographer Michel Gondry. What pushes this video from "oh it's edgy cause it's in reverse" to "holy crap" is the use of split scenes. It shows the exactly same scene in two panels, one forward one backwards, and they meet in the middle. Only Gondry could pull that off.

Worst Concept of the Week: Rip Slyme - Galaxy

What the hell is happening in this video? The idea of using rapper finger puppets in matching stripped shirts accompanied by finger "animation" has to be an idea crafted by hand fetishists after a long night of drinking. The PV for "Galaxy" has no plot, the cute girl unfortunately adds nothing to the video, and set looks like it was built by Fisher-Price. It is only slightly redeemed by the cool finger-star in the last seconds of the video. Admittedly, the song is rather catchy by itself too.

...and that Sakanaction song is now stuck in my head.
